Operative Instructions for Sinus Elevation Surgery

You will be prescribed an antibiotic to begin taking 24 hours prior to your surgery, along with a decongestant/antihistamine and an over the counter nasal spray (Afrin). Begin 24 hours prior to your procedure, continuing as directed. Remember that antibiotics can diminish the effectiveness of oral contraceptives. The prescription decongestant/antihistamine will again be taken beginning 24 hours prior to surgery, and then twice daily for 10 days. The Afrin will also begin 24 hours prior to surgery, twice daily (2-3 sprays in each nostril), for 3-5 days post operatively.

After your Sinus Elevation surgery, it is not uncommon to have a small amount of bleeding from the nostril on the treated side for several days. If more persistent bleeding occurs, please contact the office for further direction.

If necessary, wipe your nose rather than blowing it for 2-3 weeks, to avoid pressure on the sinus.

Do not sneeze through your nose. If you do sneeze, be certain that your mouth is open to limit pressure on the sinus.

Do not smoke for at least 14 days after the procedure. We encourage you to begin a smoke cessation program. Please let us know if we can assist you in your efforts to stop smoking.

Do not use a straw for 7-10 days to help reduce the potential for bleeding.

Avoid swimming and strenuous exercise for the first week post surgery to limit pressure on the sinus.

Take pain medication before the local anesthetic wears off. If necessary, you may take it more frequently than the prescribed 4-6 hours. To avoid stomach upset, take your pain reliever with food.
