Scaling & Root Planing

Periodontics Illustration of ScalingThe initial stage of periodontal treatment usually begins with a series of thorough cleanings (debridement) that includes “scaling” the teeth to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) deposits beneath the gum line. Although calculus doesn’t cause periodontal disease, it acts as a rough surface around which plaque and bacteria “nest” below the gum tissues, encouraging the development of periodontal disease.

The teeth are also “planed” to smooth root surfaces, allowing the gum tissues to heal and reattach to the tooth surface in areas of early periodontal changes. By providing multiple appointments rather than in the limited time dictated by a single cleaning visit, and in using local anesthetic to prevent soreness, exceptional thoroughness in a pain-free environment can be accomplished.

When deep pockets are present between teeth and gums, periodontal surgery is necessary to restore tissue health. After the completion of the initial phase, Dr. Kobernick will reexamine the tissues to determine the extent of surgery necessary to achieve periodontal health and long-term stability.
