Connective Tissue Grafts / Root Coverage

When exposed roots are sensitive to hot or cold liquids and foods, or your smile needs to be enhanced by covering one or more exposed roots that make your teeth appear too long, a connective tissue graft is placed.

A connective tissue graft is designed to cover exposed roots. Topical (gel) anesthetic is applied, and local anesthetic is gently placed into the area.  A thin piece of tissue is taken from the roof of your mouth, or cadaver tissue from a tissue bank is used.  Marginal tissue in the area of the recession is gently lifted, and the graft tissue is secured using dissolvable microsurgical sutures to cover the exposed roots.  The marginal tissue is then repositioned to cover the grafted tissue, and it is secured with microsurgical sutures.
