Crown Lengthening

Esthetic periodontal procedures are available to create the framework for subsequent restorative and cosmetic dentistry, and/or improve the esthetics of your gum line. One such application is to improve a “gummy” smile, where the teeth appear short. The teeth may actually be the proper length, but they are covered by too much gum tissue. By completing a crown lengthening procedure, excess gum and bone tissues are recontoured to expose adequate length and shape of the natural tooth. This can be done for one tooth to even the gum line, or for multiple teeth to expose a natural, broad smile.

Another application for the crown lengthening procedure is when a tooth is decayed, broken near to or below the gum line, or has insufficient tooth structure left to create a stable restoration, such as a crown or fixed bridge. Crown lengthening adjusts the gum and bone levels to expose more of the tooth so it can be restored.

Topical (gel) anesthetic is applied, and local anesthetic is gently placed into the area. The gum tissue is elevated, and bone around the involved teeth are reshaped to create the proper length. The gum tissues are precisely repositioned and sutured with dissolvable sutures.
