Laser Therapy

You will be scheduled for a consultation to determine if you are a candidate for laser periodontal therapy, and for us to explain the LANAP procedure. If laser periodontal therapy is appropriate treatment, at your first LANAP procedure, you will receive a local anesthetic to eliminate any possible discomfort. A tiny laser fiber (about the thickness of three hairs) is inserted between the tooth and the gum, and the infected tissue is gently removed. A special ultrasonic scaler is then used to smooth the root surfaces, followed by a second pass of the laser to eliminate residual bacteria in the pocket and to control any slight bleeding. Your occlusion (bite) will be adjusted to eliminate any interferences on the side treated.

Dr. Kobernick will treat one half of your mouth at each session, with each session taking approximately 2-2 ½ hours. You should have minimal soreness after each procedure, requiring medication equivalent to Advil. You will probably feel good enough to go back to work after the LANAP procedure. Remember, laser treatment does not involve any cutting of the tissues or the use of stitches.
